Arsenal are locked in talks with Villarreal to sign 24 year old centre half, Gabriel Paulista reveals the Telegraph, but there remain several obstacles to overcome before anything can be finalised.
Any deal to bring the Brazilian to the Premier League is hinge on whether Arsenal can secure a work permit.
The report claims that Arsene Wenger have been very impressed with the player’s displays in the Spanish top flight this season, and he has been part of a Villarreal back four that has put an unbeaten run together since early November.
His age presents Arsenal with a perfect opportunity to bring in a defender who would serve the club for this period and in the long term as both Per Mertesacker Laurent Koscielny are six and five years his senior in age.
Arsenal are reported to have proposed a fee in the region of £6 million, which has a potential to rise to or beyond £10 million. However, Villarreal are thought to want a fee that is close to the player’s release clause which stands at £15.25 million (€20 million). While Arsenal remain in pole position to sign Gabriel Paulista after he declared that North London is his preferred destination, Manchester United are reported to still be interested in signing him.
Despite the present obstacles to the deal on fees and work permit issues, Villarreal’s reported interested in Joel Campbell could play a part in any deal for the Brazilian to join the club. However, there remain a strong reluctance on the part of Arsene Wenger to allow three strikers to leave the club in January, after both Lukas Podolski and Yaya Sanogo left earlier this month, a third leaving seem completely out of the cards at the moment, any deal for Paulista is expected to be a straight cash deal.
The rule on work permit in England provides that a player who is not from a European Union country is expected to have played 75% of his country’s matches over a period of two years, and such country must be within the first 70 countries in FIFA rankings. Where a player fails to meet these criteria, there is machinery for an appeal that his handled by the English Football Association on behalf of the British Home Office, where a player could be handed a special talent visa or the criteria relaxed on an individual case basis.
The Villarreal centre half has not featured for Brazil, so he definitely cannot qualify for a work permit, and Arsenal have signed players in the past that failed to meet this criteria, and they had to be sent out on loan. Although, it must be said those signings were players who were teenagers (Wellington Silva, Joel Campbell and Carlos Vela and several others).
However, he claims, its something his agent is working on.
“If I go to Arsenal it will be excellent. But if it’s not finalised then i am relaxed. I am focused on my work here.
“My agent is working on making sure i continue being calm. Playing in the Premier League is one of my dreams. I have spoken to my agent about this.”
