Toliko.

Velež Mostar: The Barcelona of the Balkans

With many thanks to Milko Milinović and Sabina Krpić for invaluable help with local knowledge and historic information. This article, about a historic club in a fascinating region of Europe, could not have been written without them. Special thanks to Milko in particular, for telling me about the unique origins of the Rođeni.

Introduction
As an English football fan, the name of the Yugoslav football team "Velež Mostar" has a certain ring to it, similar to the Czech side Dukla Prague who even had a song written about them by the Merseyside band Half Man Half Biscuit. Velež Mostar were a club that in their golden era had been given the romantic epithet "The Barcelona of the Balkans." Mention of their name brings back memories of pure knock-out European football in the 1970s and 1980s: difficult trips beyond the Iron Curtain to Eastern European outposts where potentially tricky ties were played against technically gifted Slavic opposition. Velež, based in what is now Bosnia & Herzegovina, were one of the famous names of old Yugoslav football before the violent break-up of that nation. Since the Balkan War and the disintegration of Tito's nation into independent states though, Velež have fallen on harder times.

Origins

The first club to be formed in Mostar were created by a team of high school students, Đački Športski Klub (Students Athletic Club). Bosnian Croats mainly played for this team, and in 1912 they were named HŠK Zrinjski Mostar. More on this particular club later. Meanwhile, in 1906 Bosnian Muslims had founded their own team, Ittihad. By 1922, this team had evolved into the club which in 1922 was founded as Velež Mostar.

That day in 1922 is known as the day of "Those Who Are Born" (Rođeni)- which is also the name for any player who has represented Velež Mostar and worn their colours of red and white. Velež were named after the mountain near Mostar which is called Veles, and which itself is named after a God in Slavic mythology. The hardcore support of Velež Mostar are known as "The Red Army" and the distinctive symbol of the club is traditionally the 'Red Star'.

Not only is a 'star' part of the name of the city of Mostar in English, it also has political connotations. The 'Red Star' is the symbol of left wing politics and communist government in Yugoslavia, the ruling government of the country from 1943 until break-up in 1992. Zrinjski Mostar, the club of the right wing Croat nationalists, refused to play against Velež when they used this badge. In 2005 Velež won the right to use this badge again.

The traditional ethos of Velež Mostar was that they were a multi-cultural club, open to all religions and races, and they were associated with left-wing politics. This has changed somewhat since the Balkan conflict, with the re-emergence of Zrinjski and the identification of both clubs with nationalist politics. As a club that were forcibly disbanded between 1945 and 1992, Zrinjski are connected with right wing Bosnian Croat nationalism, while Velež are seen as representing Bosniak Muslims.

Velez Mostar- The First Golden Era: 1967-1975

In 1967, a former Velež player, Mostar-born Sulejman Rebac, became the manager of the club. He was a legendary striker who had scored over 600 goals in Yugoslav football. He began to build a gifted and youthful side around the talents of strikers Dušan "Duško" Bajević and Vahid Halihodžić; right winger Jadranko 'Jadran' Topić, left winger Momčilo Vukoje; attacking midfielder Franjo Vladić, left back Džemal Hadžiabdić, centre half Boro Primorac and goalkeeper Enver Marić. During 1972-1974, Velež were twice runners-up in the Yugoslav league, and in 1973-74 they ran Hajduk Split close for the league title. At the end of that season, Rebac was one of Yugoslavia's "Five Coaches" in their Management Committee appointed for the 1974 World Cup. Then in 1974-75, Velež reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup, knocking out Spartak Moscow, Rapid Vienna, and Derby County along the way, until they were eliminated by FC Twente of Holland.

The Stars of 1967-1975

Enver Marić Velež Mostar (1967-1976) and (1978-1985)

In his day rated as one of the very best goalkeepers in the world, Maric won 32 caps for the former Yugoslavia. He had two spells at Velež Mostar either side of a two year stint in Germany with Schalke (1976-78) After retiring as a player he became a goalkeeping coach.

Boro Primorac Velež Mostar (1972-1978)

A Bosnian Croat, he was a refined and accomplished centre half who won 14 caps for Yugoslavia, and also captained the national side. He went on to play for Hajduk Split, and then in France with Lille and Cannes. After retiring, he went into coaching and has been a long-time friend and associate of the Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger.

Džemal Hadžiabdić Velež Mostar (1971-1980)

A classy left back, Hadžiabdić played in British football with Swansea for three seasons after leaving Velež. He won 20 caps for Yugoslavia. After retiring, he became a coach and manager, working mainly in the Middle East with Qatari and UAE clubs.

Franjo Vladić Velež Mostar (1968-79) and (1981-1985)

Like Marić, attacking midfielder Vladić also had two separate spells with Velež. A Bosnian Croat, he won 24 caps for Yugoslavia, scoring 3 goals. In between his two spells at Velež he played in Greece for AEK Athens and Panachaiki.

Jadranko "Jadran" Topić Velež Mostar (1969-1977)

A right-sided midfielder or attacker, Topić spent eight seasons with Velež before venturing to the United States to play in the NASL with New York Cosmos. Since retiring, Topić has become involved, controversially, with politics.

Vahid Halihodžić Velež Mostar (1971-1981)

A very gifted striker, Halihodžić is regarded as one of the major Bosnian talents of the 1970s and 1980s. Although his appearances for Yugoslavia were limited due to competition for places and political reasons, he scored 8 goals in 15 appearances for the national team. Yet it was at club level where he was particularly prolific. After leaving Velež, he had very successful spells in French football with Nantes and Paris Saint-Germain, and was top scorer in Ligue 1 in the 1982-83 and 1984-85 seasons. After retiring from playing, Halihodžić became a noted coach and manager, taking charge of Velež before the outbreak of the Balkan War and going on to manage the likes of Lille, Rennes, Paris Saint-Germain, Trabzonspor, the Ivory Coast national team and Dinamo Zagreb.

Dušan "Duško" Bajević Velež Mostar (1966-1977) and (1981-1983)

A brilliant striker and a Velež Mostar legend as player and manager. He was nicknamed "The Prince of Neretva". He had a very successful partnership with Halihodžić during the 1970s at Velež. He was also prolific at international level, scoring 29 goals in 37 appearances for Yugoslavia. Like Marić and Vladić, he had two playing spells at Velež. In between he had a successful spell playing at AEK Athens, where he won two Greek championships, and was league top scorer in 1979-1980, becoming a playing legend there. After retiring, he became the Velež Mostar manager for four seasons from 1983 to 1987, coaching them to their second Yugoslav Cup win. Since then Bajević has been mainly associated with Greek football as a successful manager, coaching AEK Athens, Olympiakos, PAOK, Aris Thessaloniki and Atromitos; in addition he has had spells managing Red Star Belgrade of Serbia and Omonia of Cyprus.

Velež Mostar- The Second Golden Era 1981-1987

The second memorable era of Velež arrived in the 1980s, firstly under the management of Miloš Milutinović and then another former hero Muhamed Mujić (for one season) before former striking hero Dušan Bajević became manager for four successful seasons. Miloš Milutinović, a Serb, was considered one of Yugoslavia's greatest ever players. As a player he was nicknamed "plava čigra" (the Blond Buzzer) for his ability. He was the brother of the famous well-travelled Serbian manager Bora Milutinović.

Miloš Milutinović

Miloš managed Velež between 1980 and 1982. Under Milutinović, Velež won the Yugoslav Cup in 1981, beating the Sarajevo team Željezničar 3-2 with a team known as "The Magnificent Thirteen". Captain Enver Marić, Avdo Kalajdžić, Aleksandar Micić, Dubravko Ledić, Vladimir Matijević, Veselin Durasović, Dragan Okuka, Blaž Slišković, Vahid Halihodžić, Adnan Međedović, Vladimir Skočajić and the two reserves Momčilo Vukoje and Mirsad Mulahasanović. This was considered perhaps Velež's finest side. In 1986, now under the management of former heroic goalscorer Dušan "Duško" Bajević, Velež won their second Yugoslav Cup, beating Dinamo Zagreb 3-1 in the Final. In 1987-88 Velež played a memorable campaign in the UEFA Cup, being narrowly beaten by Borussia Dortmund in the Second Round, 3-2 on aggregate. The following season, Velež were eliminated 4-2 on aggregate by Scottish club Hearts in the UEFA Cup Third Round.

The Stars of 1981-1987

Blaž Slišković Velež Mostar (1976-1981)

A Bosnian-Croat, Slišković was a highly technical midfielder and a very gifted footballer. After moving from Velež to Hajduk Split, he was the 1985 Yugoslav Footballer of the Year. Although he made a limited impact at international level, he is considered one of Yugoslavia's most talented players in their history. He went on to play in France and Italy, most notably at Marseille and Pescara. At Marseille, he was one of the favourite players of the young Zinedine Zidane.

Dragan Okuka Velež Mostar (1974-76) (1977-1985)

A Serbian midfielder who had two spells at Velež Mostar, before leaving to finish his career in Sweden. He has also become a manager and coach after retirement.

Avdo Kalajdžić Velež Mostar (1977-1988)

A solid defender who played over 200 games for Velež.

Vladimir Skočajić Velež Mostar (1979-83) and (1985-1987)
A talented and direct right winger, who won the Yugoslav Cup twice with Velež. His career was, sadly, ended prematurely by a car accident. (I was unable to locate a solo image of Skočajić)

Mehmed 'Meho' Kodro Velež Mostar (1985-1991)

Kodro in the colours of Barcelona
Meho Kodro was a technically proficient striker who was also dangerous in the air. After he left Velež, Kodro enjoyed a hugely successful spell in Spain with Real Sociedad, and showed form which earned him a move to Barcelona. After hitting double figures in every one of his four seasons for Sociedad, his one season at Barcelona was relatively less successful, although this was partly due to squad rotation and the fact that the manager who signed him, Johan Cruyff, left at the end of that year.

Velež Mostar-The Balkan Conflict and Aftermath

Up until the outbreak of the Balkan War Velež Mostar was still producing players like Kodro and Sergej Barbarez (another very gifted player, a hugely talented attacking midfielder or striker who left Velez in 1991 like Kodro. He had a fine career based in Germany, playing for the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen. He also won 47 caps for the emergent nation of Bosnia & Herzegovina, scoring 17 goals).
Yet with the ominous tension that eventually resulted in the outbreak of conflict, the spectres of politics and nationalism intervened in the fortunes of Velež Mostar. Inevitably, the club went into a downward spiral. The other team in the city, HŠK Zrinjski Mostar, had been banned by Tito's Communist Yugoslavian government who sought to suppress Croatian nationalism, and as a representative symbol of that on the sports field, they were not allowed to exist. Yet when Bosnia & Herzegovina became an independent state in 1992, HŠK Zrinjski Mostar were re-founded. This predictably caused problems as nationalism ran high in Mostar during the conflict. Temporarily, the Red Star was stripped from Velež's badge as it was seen as a symbol of left wing Communist rule and the right-wing nationalist club Zrinjski refused to play against them.

The badge of Velež stripped of its distinctive "Red Star" symbol. This was because of its political connotations with left wing politics and communism. Velež eventually reverted back to their original badge in 2005. Although they have won the right to display the "Red Star" once more, they have not managed to return to their old stadium, the Bijeli Brijeg, scene of their past glory days.

Zrinjski were the team traditionally supported by the Bosnian Croats, and Velež were seen as the club of the Bosnian Muslims as the city of Mostar became ethnically divided between Bosnian Croat (right-wing) and Bosniak (Bosnian Muslims) left-wing nationalism. The Football Republik blog gives a more detailed account of this divide. Former hero Vahid Halihodžić was manager of Velež between 1990 and 1992. He was wounded in the war, and was forced to leave Mostar in May 1993 after receiving death threats from the Croatian right-wing HVO forces. After he left his house was looted and burned down. Meanwhile Velež Mostar were forcibly evicted from their stadium, the ground which they used during their glory days - the 25,000 capacity Bijeli Brijeg Stadium- by HVO forces during the conflict. That stadium has now become the home of Zrinjski. This is explored by this article at the In Bed with Maradona blog. Since then, Velež have been forced to play at the smaller 7,000 capacity Vrapčići stadium, based in the north of the city. This has drastically limited Velež's ****, and since the formation of the Bosnian football league, Velež have been unable to recapture their past glories. Despite winning one Bosnian league title and being runners-up twice they have also suffered a relegation from the top division, while Zrinjski have become the more successful Mostar club recently by winning two Bosnian League titles and the Bosnian Cup in the past ten years. For Velež to rediscover the glory of old, returning to the Bijeli Brijeg is of vital importance, yet with the modern political and cultural situation in Bosnia & Herzegovina being as it is, it is hard to see this happening in the foreseeable future. Until then, Velež leave us only with the memories.
