The chosen path with players capable of development is continued: Mario Vuskovic (19) joins HSV on a two-year loan from Hajduk Split. The Croatian centre-back completed his medical check at the UKE Athleticum yesterday evening and signed a loan contract this morning (31 August), which initially runs until the summer of 2023. After that, HSV have the option to buy.
"We have proclaimed the path of development and recently extended the contracts with many of our own young players. We have also brought in other young players. We want to continue on this path and believe in it. The signing of Mario is another signal of this. Mario is extremely motivated, has made a conscious decision in favour of HSV and is burning for this task," says board member Jonas Boldt about the signing of the Croatian U21 international.
Sporting director Michael Mutzel also describes the player profile of the internationally courted centre-back as follows: "Mario is a very balanced central defender who has all the skills for this position. He is a calm, cool-headed centre-back with good size, good tackling ability and a special gift for anticipation. He brings a lot of things with him that you need in modern football and also still has a lot of potential due to his age. We are pleased to be able to sign a very exciting player for HSV with him."
Mario Vuskovic was born on 16 November 2001 in Split, Croatia, and took his first footballing steps with RNK Split in his home town. In March 2016, the son of ex-professional Daniel Vuskovic moved to the traditional club Hajduk Split and went through the youth training centre there. The centre-back, who can also play on the right defensive side and on the six, made his debut for the professionals on 18 August 2019 in the home match against HNK Gorica. Ten more competitive games followed in the 2019/20 season (one goal) before the right-footer established himself as an undisputed regular in the following season. 33 competitive games, two goals and three assists in the 2020/21 season document the development of the strong-playing and strong-headed defensive all-rounder, who made four further appearances in the series that has just begun. Since the 1.89-metre tall Vuskovic also played 32 international matches for the Croatian youth national teams (U17, U19, U21) parallel to his club career, his name has recently made it into the notebooks of many international clubs. The contract has now been awarded to HSV, who want to introduce the 19-year-old defensive talent to the competitive level in the 2. Bundesliga.
