If only Arsene Wenger was as willing to talk transfers as he is tactics from the directors' box. The Arsenal boss was told to put a sock in it by UEFA officials as he served a touchline ban during Tuesday's clash with Udinese but as far as the transfer market is concerned Wenger is keeping stum – despite the fact that clubs are doing their best to attract his attention.
The latest is Marseille, who have made it clear they would be willing to discuss the future of Mathieu Valbuena. The 26-year-old France international is a ready-made replacement for Manchester City target Samir Nasri and in an interview with French broadcaster RMC, Marseille sporting director Jose Anigo had a message for Wenger.
"We're willing to open talks if Arsenal want to buy him," said Anigo. "We are very pleased with his performances, but we're ready to listen to offers out of respect for the player. However, we have not had contact with Arsenal."
Anigo also said that he was aware of the rumours linking Arsenal with winger Andre Ayew. Again, there had been no official approach from the Gunners.
But could Arsenal be about to snap up Lazio striker Mauro Zarate? Yes, if the player's brother and agent is to be believed. Italian rag Corriere dello Sport claims to have it on good authority that Sergio Zarate is in London to discuss a deal for his brother with Arsenal.
Quite why Wenger would want another striker is anyone's guess – and why former Birmingham frontman Zarate in particular is a complete mystery – but who knows what goes on in the mind of the nutty professor these days.
Argentine Zarate can't get a look in at Lazio now following their summer purchase of Djibril Cisse and Miroslav Klose, and Corriere dello Sport says that the 24-year-old could be Arsenal's for around £10m.
There was a time when Valencia playmaker Juan Mata was on his way to the Emirates but that possibility has gone the way of Arsenal's hopes of breaking their six-year trophy drought this season, and if he does come to the Premier League it will be to Chelsea.
The Spanish paper Marca says the Blues have already made one offer in the region of £22m and though that was knocked back by Valencia they are said to be lining up a second of around £28m. Marca also claims that Mata's international teammate Fernando Torres is being used to persuade him to make the transition.
And the Sun says that Arsenal might be on the brink of seeing another target disappear off the radar as Liverpool prepare to pounce for Bolton's Gary Cahill. The England central defender is wanted by the Gunners, but Kenny Dalglish also likes the cut of Cahill's jib and is about to make a £10m offer for the Trotters star, as well as throwing in young strikers David Ngog and Raheem Sterling.
In other news, Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is keeping his cards close to his chest as far as FC Twente's Bryan Ruiz is concerned. Redknapp was spotted in Holland on Tuesday watching the Costa Rica frontman score in the Dutch club's 2-2 draw with Benfica in the Champions League qualifier.
"I went and watched the game and watched him play," admitted Redknapp. "He's a good player that I have watched before." The 26-year-old Ruiz has been in fine form in the past couple of seasons and stories linking him with Spurs first emerged in June.
