The Gradual Rise Of Ricardo Alvarez
September 9, 2013

slika

In the midst of all musings surrounding cult hero Wesley Sneijder’s apparently inevitable move to Old Trafford, Marco Branca fiddled away competition from the likes of Arsenal and Napoli to land Ricardo Alvarez from Argentinian side Velez Sarsfield. The €12 Million was initially seen as a replacement for the Dutch Maestro but as fate were to have it, the deal fell through and so did the prospective impact that Alvarez could have made at the very inception of his Nerazzurri career.

For starters, it is worth mentioning that the Argentine midfielder is one of the silkier types when on the ball, oozing class and composure in terms of picking the right man with the right pass, or dictating the tempo of the game from central midfield. At Velez, he was the numero uno of his team’s play in the opposition’s half. Not being blessed with a quick turn of pace, the midfielder makes it up with a supreme sense of positioning, both when on the ball and when off it. Alvarez isn’t your typical trequartista that many mistake him to be – infact, his best times for Velez and Inter have come when he has stationed himself between the lines of central midfielders and the advanced play-maker. His tendency to drift wide into either the left or the right flank, move forward or drop deep in search of space makes him an unique prospect in the game.

Under the tutelage of Gasperini and Claudio Ranieri, Alvarez was mostly used as a left sided playmaker given the need to accommodate the slowly depreciating Wesley Sneijder through the middle. And understandably so, the Argentine found life difficult given his little experience down the wings. The appointment of Strammacioni brought about a change in the fortunes of the midfielder, as he was played to his strengths in a setup that very much relied on the creative spark provided by Alvarez.

In the derby madness against city rivals Milan, Alvarez put in one of his better performances in an Inter shirt. The graphic below shows the starting position and the action zones of the midfielder.

slika

Notice the starting position and the average position of the #11 (Alvarez). Though he started down the left, his average position during the game were between the central midfielders and the Wesley Sneijder, the #10. For further clarification, let us now have a look at his heat-map during the game.

slika

As the heat-map suggests, Alvarez spent most of the game between the line of central midfielders and Wesley Sneijder. On the odd occasion, he drifted out to the left to overload the wings and test Milan’s right hand side.

Under the stewardship of Mazzarri, thus far the Argentine has emerged as a surprise package, moving himself into the spotlight after a string of impressive displays against Genoa and Catania. In the 3-5-2 deployed by the Italian tactician, Alvarez has started in between the central midfield and attack, playing a free role. In a midfield largely comprised of grit and muscle, the Argentine provides the class and composure on the ball that makes up a perfect blend in the middle of the park for the Nerazzurri.

For a detailed explanation, let us now put the midfielder’s role under a microscope.

slika

At the San Siro, as the Genoa backline pushed deeper to squeeze up space for the Inter forwards, Alvarez pushed himself further up the pitch as he found that extra yard of space to influence the game, his second half resurgence being the catalyst behind dispatching off the Rossoblu to collect all three points. The graphic below that portrays the action areas and the heat-map of Alvarez during the game.

slika

Throughout the 90 minutes, Alvarez kept his opposite numbers on their feet with his astute movement down the sides of the Genoa defense or through the middle. The midfielder attempted a total of 8 dribbles and made a total of three key passes, constantly putting the Genoa midfield under pressure by creating 4v3 in the middle, or overloading the left wing by creating a 2v1 against Sime Vrsaljko and a surprisingly lazy Issac Coffie.

Against Catania, fans and critics like were exposed to the unknown side of Alvarez. The midfielder dropped deeper than usual to collect possession and spread play out wide to Jonathan and Nagatomo.

slika

In a similar role of a regista, Alvarez dropped deep between the defense and midfield to become the third body in midfield, dictating play as a quarter-back. The Catania midfield came up explicitly short against a well oiled Inter and lost out in a comprehensive 3 goal trouncing.

The newest domains of the game require the ideal footballer to excel on the both sides of the pitch. Not only should be flamboyant on the ball, he is also expected to be a tireless worker off it. Ricardo Alvarez is a member of a rare breed of footballers who thrive as artists rather than athletes. As fine painters, these footballers have been known to spray their class on the grassy canvas. But, legend has it that this clan of ‘La Bella Figura’ footballers have thrived when their mentors play to their strengths, instead of the player playing to his mentor’s idea. After a couple of seasons of Alvarez doing the latter, can Mazzarri finally realize the gem within his squad.

Inter 0-3 Roma: Totti drags Inter’s back three out of shape to prompt quick attacks
October 8, 2013

Roma maintained their 100% record with a win at previously unbeaten Inter.

Walter Mazzarri made two changes from the 1-1 draw at Cagliari, bringing in Saphir Taider and Rodrigo Palacio for Mateo Kovacic and Ishak Belfodil.

Predictably, Rudi Garcia kept exactly the same side which demolished Bologna 5-0.

This was another superb Roma display – and although their 3-0 half-time lead was slightly flattering, they played some sparkling football at times.

slika

Inter backline dragged around

Now 37 years old, Francesco Totti has been the star of this Serie A season, turning in a serious of good performances in something approaching the ‘false nine’ role he famously played so well under Luciano Spalletti, and leading the assist charts across Europe’s major five leagues. His relationship with the two wide players, Gervinho and Alessandro Florenzi, has been particularly good – and therefore the major question here was about how Inter’s back three would cope with Roma’s front three.

In the early stages, Inter tried to press Roma aggressively – which involved the wing-backs moving forward to shut down the Roma full-backs. In turn, to prevent Gervinho and Florenzi finding space out wide, Inter’s two outside centre-backs, Rolando and Juan Jesus, had to move into extremely advanced positions to close down – moving in front of Esteban Cambiasso, Inter’s deepest midfielder. Already, there seemed to be problems with the positioning of the back three – they were being pulled too high up the pitch, and there were huge gaps between them.

Totti

But the major problem was their attempts to track Totti, who varied his position superbly to drag Inter’s defenders into crazy positions. At the start of the game, it seemed Jesus was the defender attempting to stick tightest to him – but Totti was moving into central positions to pull Jesus away from his left-sided position. As a result, the left half of Inter’s defence was bare, so Alvaro Pereira had to drop back extremely deep to cover.

On other occasions it was Rolando tracking Totti, and the same thing happened on the other flank – with Gervinho varying his positioning, switching with Florenzi throughout the first half, he was also able to exploit the space down that flank, too.

0-1

Put simply, Inter’s three-man defensive line lacked any kind of structure and the three centre-backs spent much of their time desperately sprinting laterally across the pitch to cover for each other. The first goal, on 17 minutes, was a decent example – it originated from a mistake by Rannochia, who misplaced a simple clearance towards the right of the pitch.

He then attempted to move out to that side, but both Jesus and Rolando ended up covering for him, and at one point all three defenders were in a vertical line towards that side of the pitch. All three end up sprinting suddenly towards the opposite side, but were unable to prevent Totti firing in from the edge of the box.

But it was Totti’s movement that caused the problems – on one occasion he and Gervinho moved both towards the ball and allowed Vasilis Torosidis to charge in behind, but usually it was simpler. Totti would move towards play, one of the centre-backs would follow, another would cover, and Gervinho would have space to sprint into. On 24 minutes, only a desperate last-ditch tackle from Alvaro Pereira denied Gervinho a clear sight of goal after one of these moves.

slika

Pereira v Gervinho

This was arguably the game’s key direct confrontation. Because of Jesus being dragged to Totti, Pereira was expected to drop deep and defend against Gervinho – but he got space in behind him when Inter were attacking. After ten minutes there was an incident where the Uruguayan was left free, and Gervinho seemed to deliberately stop short of tracking him past a certain point, instead remaining in a position to counter-attack. Sure enough, when the move broke down, Gervinho dribbled forward dangerously with Pereira nowhere to be seen.

But Pereira was getting space, and produced a couple of fine deliveries into the box – midway through the first half, his unchallenged cross found Ricky Alvarez, whose header forced Morgan De Sanctis into a decent save. The Pereira v Gervinho battle eventually saw Roma triumphant, but Inter were getting chances to cross.

0-2

Considering Inter’s problems often started from Juan being dragged out of the back and Pereira being forced to cover, the nature of the second goal verged on self-parody. This time Inter had possession, with Jesus picking up the ball as the deepest defender. He managed to dribble powerfully past three Roma players until he was in an advanced midfield position, but then was tackled and was desperately out of position.

Never mind Totti prompting Roma’s attacks through clever positioning – this was a situation Inter had got themselves into. De Rossi immediately hit the ball out to Gervinho on the right, running into the space Jesus should have been covering. Cambiasso covered but couldn’t tackle successfully, and then the hapless Pereira made a clumsy recovery tackle, conceding a penalty. Totti converted in the 40th minute.

slika

Roma counter-attacks from corners

Roma’s other major **** of attack was counter-attacks from Inter corners – again, Totti was the main man.

On 4 minutes, Inter had a corner cleared, and Totti was first to the ball on the edge of the box. He held off three Inter players, played a good forward pass to Strootman, and the Dutchman transferred the ball onto Gervinho, who had a low cross cleared at the near post. It was a lightning fast counter-attack, and a warning to Inter.

0-3

But the home side didn’t heed that warning – in the 44th minute, an Inter corned was again headed straight to Totti on the edge of the box – he juggled the ball to hold off Pereira, and flicked it around the corner into the path of Kevin Strootman, powering forward on the ball.

Now Roma immediately broke 4 v 3, and Florenzi provided a first-time finish just 12 seconds after the clearing header was made. It was textbook counter-attacking, and 3-0 by half-time.

Inter cause problems

Despite Roma keeping a clean sheet, Inter did cause problems. Roma pressed aggressively at times, which often forced Inter to concede possession cheaply at the back – but if that press was bypassed, Roma didn’t appear compact and Inter found space between the lines. Because Miralem Pjanic often moved forward to become involved in the pressing, Fredy Guarin, Taider and Alvarez could often form a quick 3 v 2 around De Rossi and Strootman, who sometimes conceded space both in front and behind.

The movement of Palacio and Alvarez was also good – they moved out wide to let Taider and Guarin forward, and both had good efforts from the edge of the box, with Guarin hitting the post with a trademark long-range strike. Palacio was also surprisingly useful in the air, considering his lack of height.

slika

Roma also had a problem with discipline – they collected seven bookings. Two were shown to Federico Balzaretti, who therefore dismissed when the game had already been won. But a greater problem was that both centre-backs were cautioned in the first half – they needed plenty of assistance from the superb De Rossi, playing almost as a third centre-back at times.

Mazzarri attempted to change things in the second half, first introducing a second striker, Mauro Icardi, for Pereira, and putting Alvarez left. Later he brought on Diego Milito for Guarin, and went even more adventurous – and while Roma had to make a succession of clearances, the game was over by half-time.

Conclusion

This was textbook ‘false nine’ play – Totti repeatedly dragged Inter out of shape, and the two wide players exploited the space. Florenzi scored the third goal, but Gervinho had been the bigger threat.

Totti was also the key man in other aspects – opening the scoring with a fine long-range strike, converting the spot-kick against penalty-saving expert Samir Handanovic, and starting two dangerous counter-attacks from corners. He was superb throughout.

Mateo Kovacic — Scouting The Inter And Croatia Starlet
July 22, 2013

slika

Inter have been a team going through a rough patch in the last couple of seasons. Ever since their triumph over Bayern Munich in the Champions League final, the Nerazzurri have gone downhill. A period of transition can be cited as a possible alibi for their slump; it really hasn’t been all rosy at the Appiano Gentile.

Inter, like their neighbors AC Milan, have looked towards youth as the way forward. With the signings of Juan Jesus, Mauro Icardi and Ishak Belfodil, a new era has dawned at the Nerazzurri. But perhaps the leader of the new-look Inter comes in the form of a 19 year old. Mateo Kovacic has been the shining light in an otherwise dark season for Inter.

In the January transfer window, Inter made the decision to offload two of its strongest attacking midfielders. Wesley Sneijder and Philippe Coutinho would jump ship in search of the first-team football opportunities they were deprived under Stramaccioni.

The bold decision to bring in a virtually unknown 18-year-old prospect from Croatia to fill their sizable boots was seen as a risk at a time when Inter were in desperate search for guarantees. Even more startling was the fact that Inter were ready to cough up a high sum of €13m for a relatively unknown talent. Yet the burden of the price tag and the inevitable expectations that came with it wouldn’t faze Kovacic.

When you think of players who have made the successful transition from “trequartista” to “regista”, you think of Andrea Pirlo and more recently Marco Verratti; Kovacic now looks to follow suit. Having started off his career in the hole or often deployed on the as an attacking midfielder while at Dinamo Zagreb, Kovacic has settled in a deeper role.

But what is remarkable about Kovacic is the ease with which he has made the transition to a notoriously tactical Italian league. He’s fitted into a new team, a new system and a new country like casing on a sausage. In a struggling side, surrounded by players losing form without hesitation and with an air of perpetual uncertainty, Kovacic has been consistently impressive and impressively consistent. It didn’t take him too long to become the talk of the town.
Dribbling

Now here’s his forte. Dribbling is an art form, a skill that you are gifted with and one that Kovacic is certainly learning to master. Time and again Kovacic sets off on these mazy little dribbles from midfield and when in full flight, the only way to stop him is illegally. The midfielder doesn’t have to look too far to take dribbling lessons from with his captain, Javier Zanetti, famed for his mini bursts. Zanetti, nicknamed, “Il Trattore” after his wayward runs with the ball stuck to his feet, will surely have a word of advice to pass on to Kovacic as far as dribbling is concerned. According to whoscored.com, Kovacic is second only to Diego of Wolfsburg in the successful dribbling department from last season, a testament to his precocious talent.

Score: 8/10
Passing

One of the demands of a regista remains his ability to control and dictate the flow and tempo of the game from a deep position, something that Kovacic has proved himself capable of doing. Setting off attacks, spraying passes, whether it be short or long, are all the boxes that he ticks. He’s coupled intelligence in possession with the knack to pick out the right pass to provide Inter with just the right play-maker they’ve needed and lacked in front of the defense. What also has come to the fore is his composure on the ball, something that even veterans over 30 years of age sometimes lack.

Score: 7.5/10
Tackling

When a player makes the conversion from a trequartista to a regista, you cannot expect him to dish out perfectly timed tackles. Kovacic has been reluctant to dive into ball winning challenges, a side of the game that still needs development. Defensively, he may find himself as the screen in front of his defense, hence regaining possession or stopping up counter-attacks remains a big part of the job description. This perhaps can be outlined as a weakness in his inventory. A good sense of anticipation and the ability to remain one step ahead of his opponents can only develop through the best teacher of them all: experience.

Score: 6/10
What Lies Ahead

New Inter manager Walter Mazzarri noted, “Mateo has similar potential (to Hamsik) and I hope that if we can make the right adjustments – for example when attacking and getting shots in on goal – he can become very similar to Marek. I have great belief in the boy. He’s very young and he’s got plenty of room for improvement. He always listens and is very determined.”

Clear indications that Kovacic has the backing of the new manager, and after his performances last term, you can understand why Mazzarri would put his faith in the young Croat. The former Sampdoria manager has identified Kovacic’s talent and aims to nurture it in similar fashion to the beast he created in the form of Marek Hamsik. This, of course, would take time and adjustment to a role with diverse demands, to which Kovacic has got himself accustomed to in his short spell at Inter.

Mateo Kovacic remains Inter and Croatian Football’s greatest hope. He is brimming with quality and talent that Mazzarri will look to tap. But more importantly perhaps, he has the right attitude and personality to help him hone his prodigious gifts. His compatriot, Zvonimir Boban, lavished praise on him and he even claimed he can go on to become better than the former Milan man.

If you go by the performances Kovacic has racked up, the potential is at an almost frightening level. Expect his respective club and national outfits to build their future around him and, over time, to scale new heights and become one of the finest midfielders in European football.
