Estonia 0-2 Bosnia Herzegovina: Dzeko & Ibisevic Sends BiH To The Play-Offs

A goal each by Bosnia’s two German-based star strikers was enough to secure three vital points to ensure a berth in the play-offs…

Bosnia needed a victory in Tallinn to ensure they cement second placing behind Spain in Group 5 to finish as one of the best eight runners-up in the UEFA qualifying section to make the play-offs.

With a difficult home game in the final round of matches against the Spaniards on Wednesday, Miroslav Blasevic’s side were eager to finish the job today and his brigade did exactly just that thanks to Edin Dzeko’s 32nd minute goal and Vedad Ibisevic’s strike on 66 minutes.

Bosnia decimated their opponents 7-0 in Zenica in the reverse fixture back in September last year but there would be no repeat of a demolition job this time at the A. Le Coq Arena.

The Dragons, however, didn’t have to wait too long to find the back of the net. Just pas the half-hour mark, Zviezdan Misimovic did brilliantly to check past his marker on the left flank inside the box before clipping in a cross to the middle, where Wolfsburg hot-shot Dzeko was left unmarked at the near post to glance his header past Sergei Pareiko.

The Bosnians continued to attack in a bid to wrap up the game early and put an end to the on-going tussle with Turkey to seal the all-important runner-up position in the group. But despite creating countless chances, they found no way through until the 66th minute.

Again, it was the superb Misimovic who led the charge when he surged forward from inside his own half on the counter attack before slipping in Ibisevic with a precise through pass. The Hoffenheim striker coolly rounded the Estonia goalkeeper and slotted the ball into the empty net to send the visiting fans into raptures.

BiH, who have never qualified for a major football tournament, now have an unassailable seven point lead over Turkey, who play later at Belgium, with only one game to go. The victory also guaranteed that Blasevic’s men will finish as one of the best eight group runners-up regardless of what happens in Wednesday’s match against Spain.
