STEVEN GERRARD believes Liverpool have shown they can be a match for most teams in the Premier League despite their agonising defeat to Manchester United yesterday.
A double strike from Gerrard wiped out a two-goal deficit in the second half, but couldn’t prevent Roy Hodgson’s side being beaten 3-2 at Old Trafford.
With five points from as many games, it is the Anfield outfit’s worst start to a Premier League campaign in 18 years.
But skipper Gerrard has called for calm and is convinced Liverpool’s performance, particularly in the second half, augurs well for the future.
“Of course it’s going to take time before the new manager gets his feet in the door and gets his ideas over,” said the England international.
“We are improving. The performance was very good, and if we play like that most weeks we will beat most of the teams in the league.
“But we came up against a man in form and Berbatov was the difference.”
Gerrard added: “When you recover a two-goal deficit at Old Trafford, you really fancy yourself to hang on in there and get a point. But Berbatov got his hat-trick. He was superb and his second goal was world class. We are disappointed with the result but pleased with how we played.
“When you come to Old Trafford it’s important you keep the ball and score every time you go forward. We kept the ball away from them and I thought we passed it really well.
“We had to be a bit edgy in the first half because we were away from home but I thought in the second half we were a lot more positive and played some terrific stuff.
“But you get nothing for that and when you come to places like this you have to create chances from possession and score goals. We got two but that wasn’t enough.”
All of Berbatov’s goals came from balls crossed into the box, the first a header from a Ryan Giggs corner, the second a fine overhead kick from Nani’s cross and the winner another header, this time from John O’Shea’s pass.
And Hodgson was unhappy with the manner in which Liverpool defended balls from out wide throughout the game.
“We should have had a deserved point, but we defended poorly towards the end on a cross we should have done much better on,” said the Anfield manager.
“The first two goals (from Berbatov) you can’t say too much, but the third was far too routine. Having done so well to get into the game, we should have kept a point.
“I don’t think we defended crosses from either side that well throughout the game.
“My criticism of the defending is less of individuals and more what we should be doing as a team, we should be stronger defending those crossing situations.”
After all, there was no 'miracle' in Istanbul, there was just a man inspiring other men to victory,a man with whom..' You'll never walk alone '
