Following their opening day defeat to Chievo, the former Nerazzurri captain has claimed that the players must now instantly improve

Despite Frank de Boer recently highlighting Inter‘s lack of conditioning, vice-president Javier Zanetti has firmly stressed that the team can have no excuses for Sunday’s 2-0 Serie A defeat to Chievo.

Whilst insisting that the Nerazzurri must respond in a positive manner against Palermo, he was optimistic about the input of their new Dutch tactician, who he believes can make make swift improvements to his squad.

“There is no justification for the defeat against Chievo,” said Zanetti to Premium Sport. “Not even the physical conditioning.

“We must react immediately and capitalise on the motivation that is provided by our supporters. They are the most important thing that we have.

“De Boer is an intelligent tactician and he knows where we need to improve.”

Furthermore, in strict response to Samir Handanovic’s claims that the club’s pre-season tour hindered their preparations, Zanetti has insisted that the goalkeeper should focus his attention on training rather than placing blame elsewhere.

“Lots of clubs have made this type of trip during the summer and the players must only think about training, rather than creating excuses,” he added.

Finally, the 43-year-old insisted that Mauro Icardi will not be leaving the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza this summer, whilst also stressing that sporting director, Piero Ausilio, will be doing his utmost to conclude some late additional signings during the final week of the window.

“As for Icardi, there have been some games in the media and the board has not wanted to be involved in any of them,” he added. “As we have always said, we could not consider selling him.

“From a contractual perspective, we will speak about this a bit further down the line. Mauro must focus on playing and being a captain.

“The new shareholders will arrive here shortly and we will see what we can do. A lot of names have been mentioned and I am sure that Ausilio will have a lot of work to do from now to August 31.”

Then ‘El Chino’ spoke about how he was welcomed by the Inter-fans before talking about his now legendary debut at the club: “it’s lovely to meet Inter fans in the streets of Milano after all this time, it’s funny since I think many of the fans who just to boo and jeer me now come up and say they always liked me and I don’t think they’re telling the truth but it’s nice.
