All-Star voting closed last night, with a good chance Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving would get voted in by fans despite missing most of the season to injury
Irving’s inclusion, along with ballot leader Dwyane Wade, would create a numbers problem for every other Eastern Conference guard, including Isaiah Thomas. As such, Brad Stevens made a big pitch for his point guard, who would have to be voted onto the team by coaches.

“I’m biased but the one thing I do believe in the All-Star thing is that those spots are earned,” the Celtics coach said before last night’s 118-113 overtime loss to the Mavericks. “He’s sure done a lot of work. He’s not only a dynamic scorer, but the way he’s been able to run offense and defend for us — obviously he’s elevated our team. As far as putting the ball in the basket, over the last few weeks he’s been as good as anybody. That consistency merits that honor. There’s a lot of good players in the league — I understand that. I don’t know if they’re all as impactful on our team as Isaiah is on ours.”
