It’s no secret the Chicago Bulls could use some help on the perimeter. Whether they’ll address it in the draft is another story.

With MVP Derrick Rose(notes) leading the way, the Bulls made a big leap to a league-leading 62 wins and the Eastern Conference finals thanks to a major overhaul that came on the heels of back-to-back first-round playoff exits.
They fell short, though, against Miami in the playoffs. Their inability to connect from the outside was glaring, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll address it in the draft.

The Bulls own the 28th and 30th picks, plus a second-rounder, and general manager Gar Forman said he is more inclined to go with the best available player than one who fills a need. He was also quick to point out that weaknesses can be addressed through free agency and trades, even though the looming lockout is casting a huge cloud of uncertainty over the landscape.

“I’ve always been a huge believer that you draft the best player available,” Forman said. “Every team in the league has certain needs. When you look at needs in my mind, there’s not just the draft. You’ve got free agency, you’ve got trades and you’ve got the draft. When you’re higher up in the draft, which we’ve been at times in the past, if you’ve got two guys that are tiered closely together then you may go for need. When you’re drafting as late as we’re drafting, we’re not necessarily going to go for need. We’ll go for two guys that we think fit the culture we’ve created and can play in the rotation, if not immediately then somewhere down the road.”

The Bulls generally prefer more experienced players from winning programs like Kirk Hinrich(notes) (Kansas), Ben Gordon(notes) (Connecticut), Chris Duhon(notes) (Duke), Joakim Noah(notes) (Florida) and Taj Gibson(notes) (Southern California).

Rose was an obvious exception when they drafted him with the No. 1 pick out of Memphis in 2008. Another was Luol Deng(notes) out of Duke in 2004, and both worked out well for Chicago. Tyrus Thomas(notes) and James Johnson(notes) did not.

“I do think that we want to get guys that fit with the guys that we have,” Forman said. “Guys that are workers, guys that have been a part of winning, guys that accept roles. That’s where a lot of our digging comes in. More times than not, we’re going to go with makeup and character.”

Possible options for Chicago could be Butler guard Shelvin Mack, Purdue power forward JaJuan Johnson, Duke guard Nolan Smith, Duke forward Kyle Singler, Cleveland State point guard Norris Cole and Hofstra guard Charles Jenkins. Georgia’s Travis Leslie, Michigan<="" p="">

Forman said the Bulls brought in 40 to 50 players for workouts, and he figures about 20 of them will be gone before Chicago selects. He also expects both first-rounders to stick with the team and doesn’t anticipate keeping three rookies, meaning that second-round pick (No. 43) could get cut, traded or stashed overseas.
Forman has been exploring trade options, but he doesn’t see the need for a major shakeup, even with a big obstacle down south standing in the way.

Never mind that the Heat came up short against Dallas, they figure to be in the championship mix for years to come and could be a major headache for the Bulls. They already are, actually.
The Heat gave Derrick Rose fits in the conference finals and without a reliable shooter, the Bulls were out in five games. How bad was it for Chicago?
The Bulls hit 10 of 21 3-pointers in Game 1 against the Heat and got nothing — or so it seemed—the rest of the way, going 21 of 78 from long range after that.
They shot 42.2 percent overall and 32.9 percent on 3-pointers during the playoffs, not that they shot great during the regular season, either. Chicago ranked 19th in field-goal percentage (46.2) and 18th on 3-pointers at 36.1 percent.

Keith Bogans(notes) started all 82 games at shooting guard, and Forman said he “had a good year for us.” Whether the team picks up its option on him remains to be seen. The deadline is July 10, but the looming lockout figures to put that on hold.

“We like our team,” Forman said. “Our feeling is still for the most part is that it’s a young team that’s going have a chance to grow together down the road. We want to give this team a chance to grow together.”

Areas Of Strength:
Point guard Derrick Rose won an MVP award after a summer when he was motivated merely by a first-round exit. How hard do you think he's going to work this offseason after getting ganged up on and beat in the Eastern Conference finals? The Bulls also get serious mileage out of their defense, their depth and their chemistry.

Needs Work:
The Bulls' offense isn't worthy of a conference champion, much less capable of taking them a step beyond. Keith Bogans, used for his defense, still was a misnomer as a shooting guard. Center Joakim Noah regressed in his jump shot and confidence. Noah and power forward Carlos Boozer haven't even shown they can play well together at that end.

Two Stats That Matter:
72.0 -- Percentage of games in which Chicago's defense held an opponent below its scoring average. The Bulls were 51-7 when they did that.

12.6 -- Carlos Boozer's postseason scoring average. And that included a couple of breakout games that pumped up what the Bulls were getting from their power forward night in and night out.

The Way To Go:
Chicago's best bet would be to work the trade market hard as draft day approaches. With its two late first-round picks, it might be able to put together a package for a shooting guard (O.J. Mayo? Courtney Lee?) to take some of the pressure off Rose.

sad se postavlja pitanje zasto nismo odma trade sa Minesotom i uzeli sebi dobrog sutera? ...mislim da nasim to nije ni bilo u cilju i da im je cilj bio poslati sto vise pickova nekome i nekog igraca ostaviti u evropi...izgleda da se sprema nesto trade ili dovodjenje nekog ko ce biti nesto suplji..ovako smo se oslobodili sigurno preko 2m sto bi sa onim sto nam je ostalo kad odu Scalabrine,Lucas,Pargo moglo biti dovoljno da dovedemo nekog ko de imati nesto vecu platu...naravno oticemo mozda 2-3m preko capa ali sta fali

Evo nam i drugog Butlera, a izgleda da misli ono sto i trener Thibs misli ...opet moramo traziti sutera pored njega, jer i ovaj igra odbranu,a i opet bolji je suter od drugih koje imamo u ekipi bilo kako bilo...sad nam treba dovesti jos jednog nesto boljeg sutera recimo JR Smitha , jer ostale cisto sumnjam da mozemo dovesti i bice ok za slijedecu sezonu...jest da opet nije to ono sto se ocekivalo, ali ipak puno cemo biti bolji u odnosu na proslu sezonu.

Nikola Mirotic izgleda dobro suta i svakako da ce u buducnosti dobiti priluku, ali sad je ipak prioritet ga zadrzati u Madridu dok nam salary cap space se malo oslobodi nakon slijedece sezone

a zasto? ma nismo nista mogli bolje proci kad su ljudi birali prije nas ...mogli smo trade i uzeti nekog ko mozda nam nebi ni odgovarao...ovaj nam lik odgovara i odgovara nam zato sto ovaj crnogorac nece biti pod salary...ja sam zadvoljan sa ovim momkom jer igra odbranu i solidan je suter..prije svega pozitivan je i nije neko zbog koga ce nas glava zaboljeti..bice on jos bolji, a naravno njegovim dolaskom napokon i Deng ce imati vise sanse da se odmori...jednim igracem skoro pa dvije pozicije smo dobili sto nije nikako lose..istina nije vrhunski suter koga mi trazimo, ali nisu ni drugi nista puno bolji ebiga.

Iz prostog razloga sto ako ne dovedemo nekog jakog free agenta, onda smo dzaba ovo s Minnesotom uradili jer smo vjerovatno mogli izvuci dva solidna role igraca, a i Shelby mi je puno bolji izbor od Butlera.
Meni se licno svidja sto forsiramo karakter prije svega radi svlacionice, ali nekad valja izabrati i talenat iznad svega. Ma vidit cemo sta ce se jos desiti, ovo je tek pocelo sve, ali mi glupo da je Minnesotra uzela onog Marotica kao 23i totalno nerealno.

Vjerujte mi da je ovaj Jimmy Butler karakter kakvog zelite u svlacionici, da je igrac kakvog zelite na treningu. Moze dosta napredovati jer jednostavno momak ne prihvata sve sto mu se da, znaci zeli da ide naprijed. Dosta vas navijaca Bullsa ce govoriti kako je on greska ovo ono, ali on ce vas ubijediti i pokazati vam da ste pogrijesili u vezi njega. Radna navika koju ovaj momak ima je zaista nevjerovatna. Ostaje nam da vidimo, ali jednostavno mene je taj momak ocarao, prvenstveno zbog zivotne price koju ima, momku se desile stvari koje niko od nas ne bi mogao da prevazidje kako je ovaj momak to uradio, a onda gdje god je igrao, nisu imali visoko misljenje o njemu i on se borio za to sto je sada a dobio je status zaista dobrog igraca na univerzitetu. Vidjet cete nakon svega da niste pogrijesili sa njim.

Bulls' pick Butler: 'I want to be that guy who is coachable and will listen'



Jimmy Butler said he can play shooting guard at the NBA level. General manager Gar Forman said he expects Butler, whom the Bulls selected with the 30th pick of Thursday's draft, to play small forward but guard multiple positions.

Whatever the case, Butler's midrange game doesn't solve the Chicago Bulls' desire to acquire more shooters to spread the floor for Derrick Rose.



"Shooting is something we put at a premium," Forman said. "We need to get as many guys as we can to space the floor because we have such a special guard in Rose."

Butler sounded ready for the challenge.

"I definitely think I'm going to be able to spread the floor out," he said. "I'm working on my outside shot. But my big thing is defense. I'm going to be a pest and make people work for everything."

Butler said he felt his workout for the Bulls went pretty well but that he could've done better. He did say he looked forward to playing for coach Tom Thibodeau.

"I'm going to take what he has to say and put it in effect, no questions asked," Butler said. "Whatever he wants me to do, whatever any of my teammates want me to do, that's what I'll do. I want to be that guy who is coachable and will listen.

"I think I will be able to play (shooting guard) because you don't know how much time I'm going to spend in the gym to stay at this level for a long time. In order to do that, I have to get better at every aspect of my game, not just shooting. I'll be in the gym working on everything because no part of my game is perfect."
