Istorija odnosa Mourinha i Wengera, odlično štivo

In contrast to the relationship between Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho, in which there was a mutual respect between the two rivals. Mourinho referring to him as 'boss' and the constant bantering on the quality of Mourinho's wine. The relationship with Wenger contains a bit of spite. Here I'll attempt to provide information on the breakdown of their rivalry with eventual reference to the encounter they had at the coaches annual forum.

Part One: A Clash of Concepts

Wenger:
'I don't see especially that Chelsea play more English players than we do. Who have they produced, homegrown? Just one, John Terry.'

Wenger when quizzed on his Arsenal all-foreign lineup.

Mourinho:
‘Some clubs are treated as devils, some are treated as angels. I don’t think we are so ugly that we should be seen as the devil and I don’t think Arsene Wenger and David Dein are so beautiful that they should be viewed as angels.’

The initial confrontation stemmed from Jose's comments on what he perceived a fixture list that seems to favour Arsenal. Approaching the season with the intention of defending his title with the media tightly wrapped around 'the special ones' finger, the pressure was ultimately placed on Wenger to win these 'favourable fixtures.'

Wenger:
‘We live in a world where we have only winners and losers, but once a sport encourages teams who refuse to take the initiative, the sport is in danger.’

Wenger suggested the "sport was in danger" from teams like Chelsea who "refuse to take the initiative" with Mourinho having been busy in the transfer market. In reality, Mourinho had shown Arsenal and Man United a new way of winning trophies – he "parked the bus" when required – and Wenger didn't approve of the playing style, nor the transfer policy undertaken by Chelsea.

Mourinho:
'When he says he likes different Chelsea teams more than this one, I know why. Because we're champions.'
‘He is one of these people who is a voyeur. He likes to watch other people. There are some guys who, when they are at home, have a big telescope to see what happens in other families. He speaks, speaks, speaks about Chelsea.’

You can trace the simmering feud between Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger back to October 2005, when Chelsea's manager incensed his rival by calling him "a voyeur". He felt the Frenchman was spending too much time talking about Chelsea during media appearances. What annoyed Mourinho more than anything, was the open criticism of his successful methods. Wenger accused the all-conquering Blues of playing negative football.

Wenger:
"He's out of order, disconnected with reality and disrespectful. When you give success to stupid people, it makes them more stupid sometimes."

That strikes a nerve with Wenger and, in November 2005, there is a threat of legal action against Mourinho.

Mourinho:
"At Stamford Bridge, we have a file of quotes from Mr. Wenger about Chelsea football club in the last 12 months - it is not a file of five pages. It is a file of 120 pages so we have a very strong reaction. My objective is that it is enough."

Mourinho does not back down and states, again in November 2005, Chelsea have been keeping tabs on Wenger's persistent comments...

Part Two: The Special One versus. Le Professeur Continued...

Wenger:
‘If you compare every manager and give each one the same amount and say: “You have that for five years.” After five years you see who has done the most.’

Before that bad-tempered 2007 League Cup final, Wenger again pokes at Mourinho with a none-too-subtle suggestion of the skills required to be a top manager.

Mourinho:
‘The English like statistics a lot. Do they know that Arsene Wenger has only 50 per cent of wins in the English league?’ ‘Maybe Wenger should explain to Arsenal fans how he cannot win a single little trophy since 2005.’

Jose Mourinho doesn't hold back on fighting fire with fire, as he in return questions Wenger's credentials of being a top manager.

Part Three: Fear of Failure

Wenger:
'Chelsea have already played twice against Man United, they could have sold him last week. I think if you want to respect the fairness for everybody, this should not happen.'

After a cordial start upon Mourinho’s return Chelsea, Wenger was unimpressed when Juan Mata was sold to Manchester United – a move that he argued could distort the league table given that the Blues had played their final game against United the previous week while rivals still had to play them.

Mourinho:
'Wenger complaining is normal because he always does. He should be happy that Chelsea sold a player like Juan Mata, but this is a little bit his nature.'

Mourinho insists Wenger is just out to get him.

Wenger:
''They fear to fail.'

The Arsenal manager made the claim that other Premier League bosses are playing down their title chances because they "fear to fail".

Mourinho:
'Wenger is a specialist in failure'
'If I do that in Chelsea, eight years, I leave and don't come back.'

Undoubtedly the most famous quote in the feud between the two managers. In a feisty head-to-head which has never been particularly friendly and the flickering feud was stoked when Mourinho accused Wenger of being a “specialist in failure”. Not only that but, in their most recent encounter, Arsenal were embarrassingly beaten 6-0 in March in a game which was all the more memorable for Kieran Gibbs being sent off in a case of mistaken identity. That loss was not Wenger’s first against Mourinho. Indeed, Wenger has failed to beat Mourinho in the 11 occasions.

Wenger:
'It is easy to defend'

Wenger once more questioned Mourinho's defensive tactics.

Mourinho:
'It’s not easy. If it was easy, you wouldn’t lose 3-1 at home to Monaco."

Mourinho retaliates quickly with a quick jab to Arsenal's Last 16 Champions League Exit.

Wenger:

'I think I just told you that the biggest thing for a manager is to respect other managers and some people have to improve on that. The rivalry is real. But it has to be respectful. I believe that the managers sometimes in the heat of the game, the passion gets out of control and when I’m guilty, I regret always. I believe big clubs have a responsibility to win but to win with style.'

Wenger confirms the genuine conflict between the managers, affirming that a champion has a duty to not only win it but to win with style.

Mourinho:
'I think I would ask myself why,'
'I would to try to answer but not because of a mental block but because I would want to try to find solutions to help my team to do it.'
'This yes, try to find different way, try to find the reasons why it goes all the time against my team, but just that.'

The Portuguese insisted he would question himself if his record was that bad against another manager, having never been beaten in 13 games against Arsenal.

'In this country only one manager is not under pressure,'
'Every other manager is. I am under pressure, Steve is under pressure, Pellegrini is under pressure, Brendan [Rodgers] too.

Mourinho says Wenger is the only manager in the country not under pressure, and the only one who can criticise referees without punishment.


Part Four: UEFA Coaches Annual Forum 2016

Mourinho was the last to enter the room where Sir Alex Ferguson was waiting to give the welcome speech. There were few empty seats but there was a space opposite Zinedine Zidane and Unai Emery, so he asked if anyone was sitting there - the seats were not booked in advance. "No, it isn't possible," was the surprising reply by none other than Arsene, without a moment's hesitation. Some delegates laughed discretely while others stared into space pretending they had not heard a thing.

Mourinho:
"Wenger was right – 'you are ****ing soft’"

Mourinho barked at John Moss, who had correctly dismissed Nemanja Matic for two brainless first-half challenges.

Wenger:
‘There should be sanctions. It gives a bad image of our game. Think never do that again, because it looks, frankly, horrible.'

Wenger questions the ethics of the Madrid players as he felt they were going to ground too easily.

Mourinho:
'There are some managers, the last time they won a title was 10 years ago, the last time I won was a year ago,' he said.

Mourinho:
'I believe they [Arsenal] have a top manager, I'm not making fun here. They will be even harder to beat next season.'

Mourinho:
'More difficult for me to understand is when I compare different people with similar behaviours, with different words or with similar words.' 'Mourinho hits out at the FA after they fine him for calling a referee 'afraid', but don't fine Wenger for calling an official 'weak and naive'.'

Mourinho:
'I heard two of my colleagues from other clubs already speaking about us. I do not like that. It is not ethical. There are things that when I do are not ethical and when others do it everything is normal and nobody says that. I do not speak about the others. They can do what they want.'
