A few key questions to ponder in the second half of the season

* Can the Celtics stay healthy? Boston players combined to miss a total of 58 games in the first half of the year, and much of the team's inconsistencies can be traced to health (whether it was the absence of Paul Pierce early in the year or that of Bass late in the first half). Can the aging Big Three hold up as the schedule goes into overdrive, and will younger players like Bass and Chris Wilcox be able to stay upright?

* How will the schedule affect Boston's play? The second half of the season is downright brutal -- 34 games in 59 days, 19 of which are on the road. Not only does that eight-game road trip in March start with four games out West -- passing the trade deadline during that stretch -- but Boston hopscotches back across the country with stops in Denver, Atlanta, Milwaukee and Philadelphia. The Celtics also have 10 back-to-backs (and one back-to-back-to-back) on tap, with 16 of those 23 games coming on the road, including six tail ends of back-to-backs (and all three nights of the lone back-to-back-to-back). For a Boston team that is 8-10 in nine back-to-backs so far this season, including 0-5 on second nights ending on the road, that's a bit daunting if it craves more consistency.
The first four opponents -- Cleveland, Milwaukee, New Jersey and New York -- are all sub.-500 with a combined record of 53-81 and the Celtics need to capitalize. Things ramp up a bit, including a back-to-back with surging Houston (20-14) and Atlantic-leading Philadelphia (20-14), then the Celtics host Portland (18-16) before heading to the Left Coast.

* Can Pierce find his shot? The Celtics played their best basketball this season when their captain played his. That's hardly a coincidence. Although Boston clearly needs contributions from its entire roster, Pierce's play will dictate in large part how successful the rest of the season will be for the Green. If his shot continues to be erratic, he'll have to be an even better facilitator to keep Boston afloat. If his shot gets going, that will help eliminate some of the woes around the offense.

Decisions loom for Boston, and the schedule is going to make it difficult to get a true read on the team. It's just another obstacle to navigate in this crazy season. At the very least, we'll soon have answers to these lingering questions, and Boston will know exactly what its future holds.

The Boston Celtics are aggressively trying to trade Rajon Rondo, their fourth-leading scorer and one of the NBA's best point guards, **** told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard.

The Celtics find Rondo's personality to be too high-maintenance and his clashes with coach Doc Rivers remain an off-court distraction, **** told Broussard, and the front office is now actively pitching him to other teams. With the Celtics realizing they are no longer title contenders, they don't believe his point guard prowess is worth the headaches Rondo brings, **** say. And they do not want to build around him.

In December, the Celtics had discussions with Golden State about a Stephen Curry-for-Rondo deal, and one **** says it was Golden State that decided against pulling the trigger. But Curry's recent ankle injuries, which have caused him several problems in his short career, have given the Celtics pause.

The potential trade is still being discussed by Boston's braintrust, but they aren't sure they want to go forward with it. It also isn't clear whether the Warriors would be willing to do it. Other players would have to be thrown in to make it work financially.

Danny Ainge acknowledged earlier this season that Rondo's name came up in trade talks when the Celtics tried to acquire Chris Paul from the Hornets, but he said he wasn't shopping Rondo per se and that his name came up only because Ainge was trying to add a player of Paul's caliber.

"I was not trying to trade Rajon Rondo," Ainge told Boston sports radio WEEI in January. "There's a big difference between trying to acquire a player and trying to trade a player."

If the Celtics are now actively shopping Rondo, it would seem to be a change of course.

Rondo, 26, was suspended for two games earlier in February for throwing a ball at an official and striking him in the chest during a loss in Detroit. He played in only 22 games during the first half of the season because of both the suspension and a sprained right wrist injury.

Rondo had his third triple-double of the season (15 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists) in the Celtics' 102-96 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday, one night after he was held scoreless (with 11 assists) in a win at Cleveland.

Rondo is averaging a career-high 14.1 points per game to go along with 9.6 assists and 1.6 steals.

Danny Ainge thinks Rajon Rondo stays - but **** say not so fast

Rajon Rondo’s trade status and thorny nature are again the stuff of national speculation, and Danny Ainge isn’t surprised.

“It’s never stopped,” the Celtics [team stats] president said yesterday after the latest wave hit with an ESPN.com report Wednesday. “It’s like if the Patriots [team stats] lose three straight games, and people start talking about trading Tom Brady [stats].”

Ainge was quick to insist Rondo’s most likely team following the March 15 trade deadline is the one that pays him now. He added that he is not currently trying to trade the point guard.

“I anticipate him being here for a long time,” said Ainge, who also derided reports that Rondo, who has butted heads with virtually every coach he’s ever had, now has a worsened relationship with Doc Rivers.
Though some of the recent rumors are groundless — Rondo for Lakers big man Pau Gasol and for Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry never were discussed, according to one of the **** — the Celtics indeed are open to trading Rondo if it means getting another point guard in return.

“Are there five guys in the NBA they might trade him for?” the **** said. “If you’re talking Westbrook, Chris Paul or Deron Williams, then you have something to think about.”

The problem for the Celtics is they’re unlikely to secure a commitment in the form of a contract extension from Williams, the New Jersey Nets playmaker and impending free agent.

Indeed, Rondo’s trade value has taken a hit. The Celtics can’t hope to get back equal value for him, according to the other ****.

“There are irreconcilable differences between him and the team, and it’s been that way for a couple of years,” the **** said, citing Rondo’s well-documented stubborn streak. “His value around the league has taken a hit. He’s not exactly the Chamber of Commerce’s man of the year. They’ve been kidding themselves for years. Doc can put an arm around him and give him a kiss and try to make it all better, but that just ain’t happening.

“He was cut from the national team (prior to the 2010 FIBA World Championship),” the **** said. “I know the reason they gave was that he had to leave for personal reasons, but that’s baloney. He was cut. He’s a moody guy who has trouble fitting in.”

According to the ****, there is a dearth of interest in Rondo around the league.

“They’re desperate to (trade Rondo),” the **** said of the Celtics [team stats]. “He’s the only real asset they have. The other guys, the Big Three, aren’t assets at this point. The problem they now face is that he’s an undesirable. This league is full of undesirables, and some are more talented. You can probably get (Minnesota Timberwolves forward) Michael Beasley for less than Rondo, but he’s another guy people don’t want.

“All I know right now is that if Ainge is calling me right now, I have him over a barrel.”

Yahoo’s Woj says that the Celtics and Hawks held “exploratory” trade talks about a swap but there’s nothing doing.This comes after a New York Daily News report indicated the two had held trade talks centered around Josh Smith for some package of the Boston Big 3.

Garnet je bio toliko opčinjen onim što je Rondo radio po terenu “TD Garena”, da je odmah po završetku utakmice uzeo od zapisničara nekoliko primjeraka zvanične statistike i počeo da ih dijeli novinarima govoreći im:

Poslednji put kada je neki igrač imao “tripl dabl” sa bar 17 ostvarenja u nekoj statističkoj kategoriji, Rondo je imao tri godine. Učinio je to legendarni Medžik Džonson, koji je 1989. imao 24 poena i po 17 skokova i asistencija.

“Mislim da ga je čitava ta priča oko Lina motivisala. Uostalom, svakog plejmejkera u ligi motiviše neki takav slučaj”, smatra Garnet.

Ipak, plejmejker Seltiksa, izgleda, naročito voli da se dokazuje na terenu kada god počnu medijske glasine da će ga se Boston odreći kako bi renovirao svoju ekipu. To je bio slučaj od sredine februara, a on je u međuvremenu, za deset poslednjih dana, tri puta imao “tripl dabl” učinak.
