Re: Liverpool FC
"I knew when Xabi left (for Real Madrid) that people would compare (us) but anyone who knows football knows I am not the same player as Xabi," he said at Anfield.
Lucas has always shown promise but is only just starting to produce the form and consistency that persuaded manager Rafa Benitez to sign him from Gremio in 2007.
His performances this term have received special attention because he is filling the gap created by Alonso's move to Madrid during the transfer window.
"I try to play more forward and Xabi is a good passer," Lucas added ahead of Liverpool's Champions League opener against Hungarian champions Debrecen.
"Of course, we miss him (Xabi) but now he is at Real Madrid and we hope he will do well there. We have to now think about our squad," he 22-year-old added.
Brazilian midfielder Lucas believes he is winning over Liverpool fans after being given a tough time by sections of the Anfield crowd last season.
The 22-year-old's form dipped during the Reds' prolonged spell of poor home form which eventually cost them the title. However, he has been ever-present this term and is expected to anchor midfield again when Liverpool open their Champions League group phase campaign with a home clash with Hungarian champions Debrecen.
"Nobody likes to be criticised, but such things happen in football. In many ways it has been a good experience for me because I am strong physically and mentally now," said Lucas.
"I can play with more relaxation and patience. I can be calmer because I know the fans are supporting me more.
"If (manager) Rafa (Benitez) had wanted me to leave, he would have said so. But he always said he had confidence in my football and I was improving.
"I am now a better player than when I arrived. I did some physical work in the summer to put on some kilos to help me play in the Premier League, and that has helped me a lot.
"I am trying to improve all the time, I am feeling more confident and I will be able to maintain this level."

Re: Liverpool FC
Tom Hicks suggests Liverpool in better long-term financial health than Manchester City
Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks has promised to reduce debts at the club and free up funds from the lucrative shirt sponsorship deal with Standard Chartered bank for Rafa Benítez to strengthen the squad and claims Manchester City's current spending is unsustainable.
By Telegraph staff
Hicks, who has been criticised by many Liverpool fans for landing the club with huge debts, created when he and George Gillet bought the club, also revealed Liverpool expect to rake in £26 million plus on sponsorship revenue in the next year, including a new deal with Carlsberg, the current shirt sponsors.
Carlsberg's deal with Liverpool will end next year after 17 years after they declined to match Standard Chartered's offer, but it now seems they will continue their involvement with the club on a scaled-down format.
Hicks said: "You have to look at 'cash flow' rather than accounting – and we intend to operate Liverpool where it has a very strong positive cash flow, so we have the **** to be as competitive as possible on the pitch. That's our commitment.
"We had strong, positive cash flows last year. Our debt levels are at a very comfortable level, and we are going to continue bringing it down.
"Our goal is to have less debt than any of the top clubs, and that's a commitment we have made and will continue to make."
Hicks is dubious about City's huge outlay on signings, which has been made possible over the past year by the vast wealth of their Abu Dhabi owners.
He said: "It's not sustainable at City. They won't continue to invest like that, because it doesn't make good economic sense.
"They will make the improvements they need to make and then run it more like a business. The smart clubs operate for the long term, and you have to look at who have had success for many years."
Benítez has made vocal his frustrations in previous transfer windows over the lack of money made available to him when compared with the fees being spent by his rivals in the top four and Hicks has no doubt that the Spaniard will be looking to spend part of the £80 million windfall in January.
Hicks said: "Knowing Rafa Benítez, I suspect he's got his eye on part of it.
"As we build our revenues, it gives ability to be more competitive on the pitch.
"Everybody involved with Liverpool wants to win the Premier League – it's been too many years and it's our goal.
"I've been in sport for 15 years, and sometimes you have to do things to get the players' attention to wake up and really get focused."
Liverpool's negotiations with Carlsberg is part of that long-term strategy.
"We have an existing contract with Carlsberg until the end of the season," Hicks confirmed.
"Between now and then, we will finalise new arrangements where we will retain the Carlsberg special sponsorship packages and pour Carlsberg products in the stadium. They will be one of our key sponsors, just not on our shirts."

Re: Liverpool FC
Pepe Reina wants Liverpool to complete a remarkable European hat-trick this season.
The Reds open their continental campaign against Debrecen tonight knowing they are 12 games away from the final in Madrid.
For most clubs, three Champions League finals in a single decade would be considered greedy - but Reina thinks it's an achievable goal.
He said: "We always go a long way in the Champions League and our objective is to play in the final at the Santiago Bernabeu.
"It'll be hard but we've already played in two finals in this decade, and we want to finish it by playing in another.
"The Champions League is a competition all players love playing in and I'm really looking forward to getting started.
"It's crucial to win the first game, even more so when we're playing at Anfield. We'll go out very motivated because whenever we play in front of our own fans we give our all so that we can reward their support with a win."
Liverpool are favourites to start with a win against the Hungarian champions this evening but Reina insists no one in the home dressing room is thinking that way.
He said: "Debrecen are opponents who merit as much respect as Real Madrid or Barcelona.
"The fact they are in the Champions League speaks for itself – it means they are a good team.
"We'll know everything there is to know about Debrecen because Rafa Benitez and his staff make sure we have all the information on our opponents so that we know their strengths and weaknesses before every match.
"They will come to defend and we have to be ready for a tough game.
