Stewart Robson believes Arsenal have “a major problem”
Former Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robson believes that Arsenal have not learnt the lessons of past defeats, telling Talksport that the club do not have a game-plan.
The Gunners lost 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last night, in a disappointing opening to their European campaign.
Par for the course after a Gunners defeat, given his well-rehearsed habit of revelling in Gunners defeats, Robson has stuck the boot in to Wenger and believes that Arsenal have a “major problem.”
Dortmund 2-0 Arsenal: Gunners’ defensive frailties exposed by ruthless Germans
“Against the average sides, Arsenal will win. Against the very best sides, Arsenal lose,” Robson told Talksport.
“ That’s because they haven’t got a game plan, they are not good enough defensively, and it has been the same problem for five or six years now.
“Why are we surprised? It’s the same old thing that’s been happening for six or seven years. Whenever Arsenal play a good side, they are caught on the counter.”
Robson also believes that failings in the transfer market have let the team down, pointing to a lack of a holding midfielder and back-up centre-half, although given the fitness of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker the latter would have made little difference in Dortmund.
“The same mistakes are happening time and time again,” continued Robson.
“Everybody told Arsene Wenger he needed another centre-half, he needed another holding midfielder. Your full backs away from home can’t be playing too high up the field and allow people to counter attack. You have to earn the right to play.
“Arsene Wenger either doesn’t see it, sees it and doesn’t know how to rectify it, or knows how to rectify it but the players aren’t taking any notice of him. Whichever one of the three it is of those, it is a major problem for Arsenal.”
Arsenal have started the season slowly, with just one Premier League win, although they are unbeaten domestically following a run of three successive draws.
