Diack, 82, is under investigation accused of taking bribes of at least €200,000 (about £141,000) from the Russian Athletics Federation to cover up positive doping tests. Two other people have also been arrested, Habib Cissé, the IAAF’s former legal adviser, and Gabriel Dollé, the former director of the IAAF’s anti-doping department. Cissé and Dollé left the IAAF soon after the allegations were first made in a German television documentary last year, along with Valentin Balakhnichev, the IAAF treasurer and head of the Russian federation. Diack’s son, Papa Massata Diack, also stood down from his role as an IAAF marketing consultant, after separate bribery allegations. According to the German documentary, doping in Russia was systemic, with athletes allegedly told by national coaches to take drugs. Failed tests were covered up by the Russian anti-doping agency. Athletics was not the only sport in which Russian anti-dopers were covering up positive tests. The documentary also alleged that it happened in swimming, cycling, biathlon, weightlifting and skiing.
There are two separate investigations. One carried out by Wada into doping in Russia and the other by the IAAF’s independent ethics commission, which is being led by Michael Beloff, QC, into doping and corruption at the IAAF.
World Anti-Doping Agency commission has recommended Russia be suspended from international athletics amid accusations of doping, cover-ups and extortion.
