The Ukrainian port city of Mariupol is suffering mass casualties and a water outage as it defends itself from a nonstop onslaught by Russian forces, according to its mayor Vadym Boichenko.

The enemy occupying forces of the Russian Federation have done everything to block the exit of civilians from the city of half a million people.

Mariupol’s mayor said Russian forces had been “flattening us non-stop for 12 hours now”, the Interfax news agency reported.

We cannot even take the wounded from the streets, from houses and apartments today, since the shelling does not stop.

Officials in the south-eastern city of Mariupol, near the border with Russia, say they fear large numbers of people may be dead after many hours of continuous shelling on the city.

Deputy Mayor Sergiy Orlov says a riverside district, normally home to 130,000 people including his father, has been "nearly totally destroyed".

“We cannot count the number of victims there, but we believe at least hundreds of people are dead. We cannot go in to retrieve the bodies," he tells the BBC by phone.

"The Russian army is working through all their weapons here - artillery, multiple rocket launch systems, airplanes, tactical rockets. They are trying to destroy the city,” Orlov says.

He says Russian forces are several kilometres away on all sides.

"The Ukrainian army is very brave and they will continue to defend the city but the style of the Russian army is like pirates. They do not fight with their army, they just destroy entire districts," Orlov says.

Ne mogu vjerovati da je doslo do ovoga sta ti znaci osvojena Ukrajina ako si sve gradove sravnio sa zemljom.

Šta će mu značiti, on je tu da uzme plin, a kad sve razrusi, napraviti će humanitarnu krizu.

Kome ce prodavati taj plin? Ko ce raditi i odrzavati te gasovode ako si unistio sve sto je ljudima neophodno za zivot u moderno doba? Bolnice skole prodavnice putevi sve razruseno i unisteno, nemas normalan dotok struje, vode, grijanja o hrani i nekakvoj proizvodnji da ne govorim. Sta ces samo razgrnut ove rusevine postavit cijevi i crpit plin daj molim te.
